Image Description
While out in the field for the BC Breeding Bird Atlas, I stumbled across a bird I had only ever seen at night as eyeshine in headlights. As I walked along a path in an open ponderosa forest with rocky ledges, I accidentally flushed this bird. Stopped in my tracks and stepped down behind to a lower ledge, holding my camera so I was at eye level with this bird with a 420 mm mag lens. It opened its big pink mouth in display and I made a note of the nest, then moved away and down the path so not to alert any predators.
