We think any new book by Laura Erickson is a cause for celebration, and the delightful title below is no exception. It’s one of three new children’s books that put birds front and center.

This sweet, informative book is aimed at readers between the ages of four and seven. We like it because it mixes engaging illustrations with simple rhymes to describe 11 common birds encountered by a mother and her son during a nature walk. Our own Laura Erickson is a co-author, so the text is just right, neither fanciful nor technical, neither saccharine nor scary. “If you are a mouse, then I have to be ruthless,” says a Red-tailed Hawk. “I kill with my talons, because I am toothless!”

On Bird Hill, by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Bob Marstall, Cornell Lab Publishing Group, 2016, hardcover, 32 pages, $15.95, $20.99 Canada.
The Cornell Lab says this book, by Caldecott Award winner Jane Yolen, is the first in a series to be prepared for the Lab by the author. Based loosely on the old cumulative nursery rhyme/song “The Green Grass Grew All Around,” it tells the whimsical story of a boy and his dog who find a newly hatched bird in a nest on a hill in a strange valley. As with all Cornell Lab Publishing Group books, 25 percent of the proceeds go directly to the Lab to support projects such as children’s educational and community programs. Intended for three- to five-year-old readers.
Baby Wren and the Great Gift, by Sally Lloyd-Jones, illustrated by Jen Corace, Zonderkidz, 2016, hardcover, 32 pages, $16.99, $21 Canada.
In this charming book for readers ages four to eight, a young wren marvels at the creatures around her — a flashing blue kingfisher, cartwheeling ring-tailed cats, high-flying eagles, and others — all the while unaware that she possessed a gift every bit as impressive as theirs: a song bigger than the whole canyon. The final pages will change forever the way you listen to a wren.
