New books tell how to bird green, reveal secrets about birding

In the June 2013 of BirdWatching magazine, we described 18 new books about birds that belong in your library — and in the hands of your favorite young birder. Here are two of the titles we featured:

How to bird different

Among people who want to protect the world’s wild creatures, the most aware, arguably, are birders, so it figures that interest in green birding is growing. This persuasive book, written by the creator of the website GreenBirding, makes the case for chasing fewer birds in vehicles that emit greenhouse gases and doing more birding within a walk, paddle, or bike ride of home. It tells how to create bird-attracting gardens and meet other green birders and describes equipment, listing challenges, and citizen-science and conservation projects.
