Hagerman Bird Festival
February 14, 2014 - February 16, 2014$50.00
During the winter months, Hagerman Valley and surrounding areas play host to tens of thousands of waterfowl. In addition, bald eagles strike spectacular poses in cottonwood roosts, trumpeter and tundra swans graciously dot hidden ponds and there always seems to be a rare bird or two in the area to excite us all. Join Prairie Falcon Audubon Society and the community of Hagerman for a weekend of birding fun, education, and camaraderie. Festival activities will include beginning and advanced bird trips led by experienced birders, interactive workshops, youth activities, wine and cheese tasting, banquet and keynote presentations.
The Hagerman Valley is an ideal spot for avid birders. Located on the Pacific Flyway, the Hagerman Valley is home to several Important Bird Areas, as well as Idaho Fish and Game Wildlife Management Areas, which provide critical habitat for a broad array of wildlife, particularly birds. The Hagerman area offers a rare opportunity to view waterfowl in large numbers, especially during winter. A combination of warmer temperatures, year round open water, and a network of sheltered ponds and marshes make the area uniquely suited to support thousands of wintering waterfowl and non-game birds. The possibility exists to see as many as 100 bird species during the festival. What a great way to kick start to anyone’s “Big Year”!!
The 2014 Festival will feature over 25 individual events, including a Snake River cruise, the premier of Kathleen Cameron’s “Idaho Owls” film, informative workshops and awesome field trips, with an opportunity to visit some very special areas that are closed to the public. All-day and half-day events will take participants to a variety of habitats, including riparian, wetland and desert shrubland. Workshops will cover topics ranging from beginner birding classes to raptor and waterfowl identification. A number of the events are geared toward birders who are also photographers.
Festival attendees will have the opportunity to taste some local wines and sample local cheese. On Saturday evening there will be a banquet featuring world famous Clear Springs Trout prepared by Chef Kurt Martin. After dinner Idaho’s best birders will share tales of their most memorable birding moments.
