With the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Atlanta Falcons to kick off the NFL season on Thursday, September 6, we thought it would be fun to take a look at the birds of prey that the teams are named for.

The Eagles are in fact named for the Bald Eagle. Atlanta’s club gets its name for falcons in general, not one particular species. When the team was established in the mid-1960s, many people suggested the name “Falcons,” including a school teacher who wrote: “The Falcon is proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. It never drops its prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition.”

The following slideshow features images of Bald Eagles and the three falcon species that can be seen in Georgia: American Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon, and Merlin. The photos all come from talented photographers who’ve added their images to our online galleries. Click “Next” below to flip through great images and find out about these birds.
