An Austral Pygmy-Owl swoops toward a perch in the Batuco’s Hills near Santiago, Chile. Walter Baliero shot the photo in August 2013. He noticed that the owl often perched on the branch, so he placed a blind about 25 feet (8 m) away. “All I had to do was wait for him,” Baliero tells us. He used a Nikon D800 and a 500mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter.
Austral Pygmy-Owl occurs in forests in southern Chile and Argentina.
