Congratulations to Danny Sauvageau of St. Petersburg, Florida. He’s the winner of our Photo of the Week contest for September and October for this photo of a foraging American Oystercatcher. He shot the photo at Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, Florida, and we featured it the week of September 9. His prize is a one-year subscription to BirdWatching.

We asked Finnish bird photographer Markus Varesvuo, whose photo of a Willow Ptarmigan appears on the cover of our December issue, to judge the contest. He is an award-winning photographer, a founding member of, and a co-author of The Handbook of Bird Photography (Rocky Nook, 2013).

“The background is calm,” Varesvuo says of the oystercatcher photo, “and the image has good structure with the diagonal line created by the bird’s position. I like the way the water plays around its bill and the froth climbs up the legs. A good behavior shot!”

Look for the photo in our February 2014 issue.
