This American White Pelican is not in fact blowing the world’s largest bubble-gum bubble. It’s stretching its large pouch.

Matt White of DeForest, Wisconsin, shot the photo in mid-June at Patrick Marsh, a large wetland northeast of Madison. About 30 pelicans were present the day he visited. After this bird perched on a rock in perfect profile, it opened its bill to stretch the pouch, a move that surprised Matt. “I never knew pelicans did this,” he says.

He used a Nikon D5100 and a Sigma 150-500mm lens.
