PEEPS UP CLOSE: Western Sandpiper (left) and Semipalmated Sandpiper are always difficult to identify. I made this sketch while studying the birds from less than a hundred feet away. The distinct dark breast spots and paler crown and cheeks of the Western might be helpful clues at much greater distance.
