Part of my job working as a field assistant for the Hispaniolan Woodpecker project is conducting lots and lots of behavioral observations. Many of the Royal Palm trees we watch are covered in cavities, which leads to an incredible amount of social interaction. Some birds are breeders while others take on the role of the floater, scouring the area in search of cavities. Sometimes floater birds stray a little too close to occupied cavities, and as a result are not greeted too kindly. Here two male woodpeckers fight while a female watches.
