While birding & visiting family in florida last two weeks, I was able to go out birding with a good friend from Vero Beach (Jo Ann Andrews). On March 27th, my 70th birthday, we went to G.H. Goodwin Area (stick marsh) in Fellsmere Florida, saw many birds here but upon driving along one dike we stopped to scan the area, and Jo Ann said, “I think I have a Whooping Crane.” Music to my ears: a bird I have never seen, and it definitely was on my bucket list (being from Rhode Island). I knew I wouldn’t be getting to Texas in the near future to see any.
We drove around the dike to an area that could be walked down. I hiked the 1/4 mile along berm, and the Whooping Crane, in company of four Sandhill Cranes came into sight. Althouh about 300 yds away, I got some nice photos of the birds feeding out in the recently trimmed marsh beyond us.
It was a very special & beautiful bird to see, how can you not like being a birder……..
