On June 15th, 2014 at Piute Ponds in Southern California, I was fortunate enough to have seen this Great Horned Owl and its young one. I hear that when they move form the owlet stage, they become what is known as a brancher. I have watched this one over the last several weeks and it is definitely gaining in its abilities to fly. I captured this image shortly after sunrise. I used my Nikon D7100 with the 200-400mm lens attached. I loved the contrast between the Owls and the green. It sort of looks like they have setup a split-level condo for themselves. It is so great to be able to go out into nature and capture these moments in time.
