Always a tough target bird, it can be even harder to photograph as most views are either distant or of the bird flying away. This photograph was taken in the winter of 2013 near an international border crossing between Canada and the U.S. The actual spot on the map is called Nighthawk, but it is near the South Okanagan B.C. town of Osoyoos. On a sunny day after a snowfall I saw this bird with other partridges and Chukar foraging alongside the road as their usual sage habitat was covered with snow. I used the car as a blind, turned off the engine and coasted down a small hill where I was able to get this shot out of the open window of the car.
