Clouds blew into the Los Angeles basin in the afternoon of March 25, 2014. This provided the perfect soft, low contrast light to photograph this male Allen’s Hummingbird at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Refuge in Van Nuys, CA. He perched on a branch just off the main trail that goes around the lake, giving me about 3-4 minutes to photograph him. His colorful gorget feathers flashed as he turned his head around – it was a perfect portrait setting.
