It’s rare to get a Tropical Kingbird in Walnut Creek, CA. That’s at least 1,000 miles outside its normal range. When we first spotted this one in a lagoon at Heather Farm, we thought it was a Western Kingbird. He showed up in early March, and parked himself in or near the lagoon to this day (April 8). Somewhere along the way, he lost his tail feathers. In this shot, he’s just starting to grow them back. Three weeks later, they were almost all back.
