This Long-tailed Duck arrived in Asheville, NC, a few days ago after strong thunderstorms passed through the area. It is hanging out in a small pond near a golf course in a residential development in south Asheville. I heard that 6 other Long-tailed Ducks arrived about the same time in Hickory, NC, but don’t have any further info on that. It’s not that unusual to have Long-tailed Duck sightings off the North Carolina coast, but the appearance of these birds in the mountains and so close to the Blue Ridge Parkway is noteworthy.
