This Blue Jay was founded in Corral Canyon, outside Patagonia, AZ on 10-26-13. I was with two other birders, as part of the Tucson Audubon’s “Azure” Eastern Bluebird Blitz survey, trying to find as many of this subspecies in the area just outside this birding hot spot. My team did find Azure Eastern Bluebirds, along Harshaw Creek Road, and then in Corral Canyon. But we were stopped in our tracks when we spotted this Blue Jay. So common in the east, there are only a handful of records of this species in Arizona, and only two or so records for Southeastern Arizona. It stayed quite hidden while it foraged in some bushes, but I was able to get a reasonably clear shot. There’s no mistaking a Blue Jay — it was just so far out of range that we all did a double take! Taken with Canon 7D and 100-400L lens.
