The Wedge Overlook is located within an interesting geological feature known as the San Rafael Swell area in south central Utah. The habitat varies from high desert plateaus to mesa, buttes, washes, valleys, and gorges. At the top of the Wedge there are juniper and pinyon pine forests that provide shelter for many bird species. I’ve found it to be birdiest in the spring. My camping trip there last week was not great as far as birds go. I was standing at the top of the Wedge Overlook when I photographed this image. The San Rafael River is 1,200 feet below where I stood peering into Utah’s Little Grand Canyon. The land in the San Rafael Swell is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and it is very isolated. I took the photo with a D200, handheld, f9, 1/2000, ISO 400, -0.3 EV, 18-200mm VR at 18mm.
