Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club, NW St. George, Utah. Feb. 13, 2014. It’s a small lake by the 2nd green of the golf course. The lake looks bare in this picture but some golfers had just come by and scared all the ducks away. In the winter especially, the lake is teeming with waterfowl. The main species is American Wigeon but I have also seen Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Ruddy Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Redhead, Canvasback, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Northern Shoveler, Cinnamon Teal, Mallard and Canada Geese. Also, Herons, Egrets, Cormorants and Kingfishers. Birds of prey are also plentiful. Cooper’s Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, Golden Eagle, Prairie Falcon, Peregrine Falcon and Merlin. The hawks and falcons prey heavily an the large population of American Coot. They must be easier to catch than the Gambel’s Quail and the rabbits of which there are many.
