Interest in birds is fairly widespread on the island where I live, Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Cape Cod. If there is an unusual avian sighting, the news is very apt to disseminate through the birding community’s channels. Currently, the Martha’s Vineyard Bird Alert group on Facebook is the most active forum.
Through the grapevine I heard about a small, almost all white bird seen along a roadside in Chilmark, Massachusetts, in February of 2010. Apparently, this bird had been seen the winter before and somehow I never heard about it. I went to the location reported and, with snow on the ground, I soon spotted this beautiful sparrow working the sides of a well-travelled two-lane road. The photo is one of my favorite passerine shots.
