Kathleen Johnston saw this Red-headed Woodpecker in North Carolina.

Kathleen said she saw the woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) land in a cypress tree in her backyard in Emerald Isle. She photographed the bird from inside a shed, with only her telephoto lens poking through a partially open door. She used a Canon EOS 30D and a 400mm f/5.6 lens.

You can see the bird at these great birdwatching hotspots:

Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area, Wayne & Holmes Co., Ohio
Crex Meadows Wildlife Area, northwestern Wisconsin
Miccosukee Greenway, Tallahassee, Florida
