Australian Pelican

Published: January 23, 2005
Teela Glanville of Brisbane, Australia, photographed this Australian Pelican at a recovery center for birds injured by fishing lines and boats.

The rehab center is located at Sea World on Australia's Gold Coast. Some of the center's birds had suffered serious injuries, but Teela says this pelican's impairment wasn't obvious. The species (Pelecanus conspicillatus) breeds throughout most of Australia, and it's the only pelican found on the continent. Because of its distinct yellow eye-ring, the bird is also known as Spectacled Pelican.

Teela shot the photo with a DSC F707 Sony 5 megapixel.
