Red-bellied Woodpecker
Previous Photo of the Week
Red-bellied Woodpecker
©Glenn Phelps
Published: December 5, 2004
Glenn Phelps of Manhattan, Kansas, photographed this male Red-bellied Woodpecker as it emerged from a birdbath.
The woodpecker
(Melanerpes carolinus)
is a frequent year-round visitor to Glenn's bath and suet feeder. He photographed the bird from about eight feet away behind a sliding glass door in his kitchen.
On weekends, Glenn sets up his Canon D60 camera with a 400 mm lens on a tripod to photograph the birds in his yard. The woodpecker is one of his favorite subjects.
