Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo, Spotted Antbird, Bicolored Antbird, and Northern Barred Woodcreeper

Birds of Panama and army ant swarms, Panama Rainforest Discovery Center, Gamboa, Panama, January 10, 2012. Video length: 2:00

In Central (and South) America, finding an army ant swarm isn't easy, but it's an incredible experience for a birder. Many birds have "ant" in their names, and that's because those species are ant specialists. They follow army ant swarms and feed on the insects and small animals that are trying to get away from the ants. The Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo is one of the uber-birds endemic to the area. Many try to find one, but few see one. Your best bet is to find and army ant swarm — they're specialists. In my experience the single best place to see the Rufous-vented is at the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center adjacent to Pipeline Road, near Gamboa, Panama. The other species shown in this video are the Spotted Antbird, Bicolored Antbird, and the Northern Barred Woodcreeper. The species were filmed at the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center in Gamboa, Panama, on January 10, 2012, by John Afdem.
