Ruby-crowned Kinglet

Published: May 14, 2012
It's uncommon to see the ruby crown on a Ruby-crowned Kinglet because the bird raises its crest feathers only in excitement. But just as gallery contributor Chris Barnard took this photo, the bird displayed its namesake crown. He photographed the bird on April 29, 2012, at the North Tract of the Patuxent Wildlife Research Refuge in Maryland and posted the shot to our U.S. and Canada Gallery.

Chris used a Nikon D300 with a 300mm f/2.8 lens and a 1.4x extender.
