Violet-crowned Woodnymph

Published: January 18, 2010
Paul Abravaya, a photographer, nature guide, and biologist from the Los Angeles area, captured this remarkable image of a preening Violet-crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica), a spectacular tropical hummingbird.

Paul shot the photo from the observation tower at Hacienda Baru on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast in October 2009. "I observed him for a period of several days and was able to get shots of him feeding and preening," he says. He used a Canon 1D Mark III, a 400mm lens, and a 1.4x teleconverter. You can see more of his photos on his website.
