Tufted Coquette

The third time really was the charm for Barry Miller of Columbia, Maryland. He photographed this stunning Tufted Coquette in January 2007 on his third visit to the
Asa Wright Nature Centre in Trinidad.
The species was one of his and wife Michelle's target birds on their earlier trips, but due to its speed in flight, taking photos of the bird was a challenge. "One afternoon, we found this one preening on a branch, and the light was so good that we were able to capture details of the bird that we had never seen well," Barry says. "When it is moving rapidly, you cannot see the black dots on its rufous plumes or all of the details of the tuft."
He used a Canon Digital Rebel XT and a 70-300mm lens. See more of Barry's photos on his
website.
