A Herring Gull chases a Snowy Owl at
Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown, Rhode Island, on February 8, 2012. Subscriber Bob Weaver of Newport says he was "quite fortunate" to be in the right place at the right time to photograph the pursuit.
Bob says he was "only getting distant photos of the owl" while it perched on a far-off rock, but when it flew toward closer rocks, "it was soon spotted by Herring Gulls, and two gulls immediately began harassing it. It flew from its resting spot, and the next thing I knew, it was flying right toward me on the shore. I was lucky to get a couple of dozen photos with a gull close behind. When the owl reached the shoreline, it veered back out to its safe perch on large rocks offshore."
Bob used a Canon 50-D camera with a 400mm f/5.6 lens.
