Short-eared Owl
© Steve Large
Published: March 7, 2011
Steve Large of Nanaimo, British Columbia, photographed this Short-eared Owl in flight in December 2010 at the Nanaimo River Estuary on Vancouver Island. He posted the shot in our U.S. and Canada Gallery.

“This owl was actively hunting in a farmer’s field and came unusually close to me and other photographers,” Steve says. “The Short-ears were quite busy that day with as many as four birds hunting at the same time.” He used a Canon 50D camera, 500mm F/4 lens with 1.4x teleconverter. You can see more of Steve’s photos on his website.
