A Tennessee Warbler splashes in a bath at the
Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary on the Upper Texas Coast. Mike Roberson of Houston shot the photo with a handheld Canon 50D, a 400mm lens, and a 1.4x extender and posted it to our
U.S. and Canada Gallery.
“When Neotropical migrants arrive on the Upper Texas Coast after their long, cross-Gulf flight, they are exhausted, starving and dehydrated,” he says. “Many do not survive this arduous journey. The fresh water features at refuges like the Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary are literally life-saving for these birds. This male Tennessee Warbler
(Vermivora peregrina) was glorying in his bath. I took dozens of images of him, but I love his delighted expression in this one.”
