Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Published: August 29, 2004
Wendell Long of Waynesville, Ohio, photographed this handsome Rose-breasted Grosbeak at his backyard bird feeders.

Wendell was sitting at his dining room window "watching the usual suspects at the bird feeders. Suddenly much to my surprise and out of nowhere sat a Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Pheucticus ludovicianus) in front of my lens! I hit the button. This old man was pleased. The grosbeak did not stay long and I see few if any around here."

The "button" Wendell mentioned is a Pocket Wizard Plus Transmitter and Receiver. He uses the remote-control device to fire his Nikon D2H camera, which is set up on a tripod in his yard. The lens used on this shot was a Nikkor 300 mm f4.

You can see another stunning photo of a Rose-breasted Grosbeak on the cover of our August 2007 issue.
