An adult Common Loon swims with a chick on its back in late June 2014. William Smith shot the photo on the Muskoka River, about 18 miles (30 km) south of Huntsville, Ontario. He used a Canon 1DX and a 600mm lens.
Young loons may ride on the back of a parent at about one week of age. They do so less frequently by the time they are two weeks old. Males are more likely than females to give their chicks a ride, but observers say this varies from pair to pair.
