This remarkable photo of an Indigo Bunting just beginning to fly off a perch is our photo of the week.

Our friend and longtime gallery contributor Hans Spiecker took the photo at the Chicago Botanic Garden in the early afternoon of June 25. “There were lots of Indigo Buntings singing all over the gardens,” he says. “I focused on this one and shot a burst just as he kicked off his perch, and this was one of the results.”

Hans used a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, a 300mm f/4L IS USM lens, and a 1.4x teleconverter.
