This week’s Photo of the Week is from frequent gallery contributor Mitch Walters, who is currently assisting a bird-research project in the Dominican Republic. He shot this profile of a Broad-billed Tody in a cow pasture in the city of Piedra Blanca and posted it to our World gallery.

The species, which Mitch says is one of his favorite in the Dominican Republic, is endemic is the island of Hispaniola. “It is a very small bird with a large head and a long bill and a very short and rapid flight,” he says. “It’s seen most often in the low to mid story. Its nest is a small burrow usually dug along short, muddy embankments.”
