You won't find this information in any field guide; it's too new

What’s new? Plenty!

Take the maps on page 29, for instance. They accompany Andrew Jenner’s excellent article about the Golden Eagle. They show not only where the birds nest in the eastern half of North America, but also where they spend the winter, and, for three GPS-tracked birds at least, the routes the eagles follow when they migrate along the Appalachians. We assembled the maps using cutting-edge data shared by researchers who have been tracking Goldens in the east for years. You won’t find this information in any field guide; it’s too new.

Then consider “On the Move,” our regular column about bird migration. Until now, the column was written by migration expert Paul Kerlinger. From here on out, it will be prepared by Marshall Iliff, Brian Sullivan, and Chris Wood, the three dynamic project leaders of eBird, the real-time online checklist operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon. Marshall, Brian, and Chris are widely published researchers and accomplished tour leaders, and they’re expert birders. I’m delighted to share their up-to-the-minute insights about North America’s birds with you. Their first column — featuring Rough-legged Hawk, Glaucous Gull, and Allen’s Hummingbird — is on page 44.

And then there’s “Attracting Birds,” a new column from radio producer and author Laura Erickson. Laura has written for us before — about robins, Blue Jays, Common Nighthawks, and, most recently, the Black-capped Vireo (“The Wonder of Wichita Mountains,” August 2011) — and she’s the author of 101 Ways to Help Birds, The Bird Watching Answer Book, and other good books. We included her most recent title, Twelve Owls, in our December issue. You can find her first column, about helping chickadees and other birds through the winter, on page 43.
