One glance at the Northern Hawk Owl on the cover of this issue will tell you that we've made some changes. But look inside.
The contents pages are also new - we added pictures and simplified the layout to make it easier for you to find articles you're interested in. "Since You Asked" is new, too. We added pictures and color, and we changed typefaces to make your good questions stand out from Julie Craves's excellent answers.
We added a page to Kenn Kaufman's popular column "I.D. Tips" and moved it to the center of the magazine. And we combined two of our favorite features, "From Your Backyard" and "Gallery," into a single section. Its pages are filled with pictures and stories submitted by readers like you, so we chose a title that gives credit where credit is due: "Your View" represents your view of the bird world.
We also moved picture captions, replaced solid lines with dotted ones, and made a host of other changes. And what a great time to do so, since this issue marks a happy moment in the life of this wonderful, valuable magazine - its 20th anniversary.
To celebrate, we've prepare a roadtrip to see the 20 birds that you, our readers, told us you wanted to see most (page 50). We combed through all 119 previous issues to find the most memorable pictures to appear in these pages over the past two decades (page 22). And we asked Kenn Kaufman to share his thoughts about birdwatching - not why it's so enjoyable (anyone who's seen a hawk owl knows that), but why it's important.
His response ("Why We Must Continue Birdwatching," page 34) is addressed to birders but should be required reading for anyone who cares about the natural world.
