A Rufous-tailed Jacamar
(Galbula ruficauda) grasps a Torquatus swallowtail butterfly in its bill. Forum member Fabricio Costa shot the photo in November 2011 in his hometown of Linhares, a city on the Atlantic coast of Brazil and posted it to our
World Gallery.
He says the jacamar "only hunts insects in flight. It uses great skill and speed to catch prey. After it captures the insect, it returns to its starting point and beats it repeatedly against the perch, removing wings and breaking the outer shell, which will facilitate the intake. In Brazil it is known as Ariramba-de-Cauda-Ruiva."
