A juvenile Northern Saw-whet Owl perches on a moss-covered branch in a wooded area near Josephburg, Alberta. Raptor bander Richard Chamberland of the nearby town of Beaumont photographed the young owl on July 12, 2011, and posted it to our
U.S. and Canada Gallery.
The bird was hatched in one of more than 450 nest boxes and platforms in central Alberta maintained by Richard and fellow banders Ray Cromie and Corey Winkelmann. Our friend Gordon Court described Cromie and his banding efforts in
this blog post in October 2010.
The saw-whet owl above was banded at 22 days of age and was one of five chicks raised in one nest box. A juvenile saw-whet owl that hatched in another of the team's boxes in 2011 was recaptured at a banding station in Montana during the fall migration. "The owl was very healthy and doing fine," Richard says. "It was pretty cool to get a return on one of our banded birds."
