A Swallow-tailed Gull prepares to take flight on Española, the southernmost of the Galápagos Islands. Mike Landwehr of Waukee, Iowa, took the photo on a recent visit to the islands and posted it to our World Gallery.

“Just as I got my camera set up to photograph this beautiful bird,” he says, “it took flight, and I was able to capture this image of its takeoff.”

Mike used a Canon 1D Mark II N camera and a 500mm lens.
