A Rose-breasted Grosbeak
(Pheucticus ludovicianus) flies through the yard of
Gloria Wilson, a new contributor to our galleries from Jackson County, Michigan. She posted the spectacular photo in our
U.S. and Canada Gallery in mid-July 2011.
Gloria enjoys taking pictures of the birds in her yard. She sets up her Canon 5D II camera and 70-200mm lens at an open window in her house and pre-focuses on a spot birds might fly through on their way to and from her feeders. “The house acts as both a blind and a giant softbox,” she says. “There are many perches in the area, and I watch to see the approach and departure patterns of different species and focus accordingly.”
Her approach requires a lot of patience, but what a pay-off!
