A Dunlin
(Calidris alpina) opens its bill wide while walking on a sandbar at Conneaut Harbor in northeastern Ohio.
Prem Balson of Columbus, Ohio, shot the photo at the popular birding site in May 2011. “There were only a few shorebirds on the sandbar,” he tells us. “I approached a pair of Dunlins very cautiously, keeping myself low to the ground as much as possible. I was fortunate to spend 30 minutes photographing them in breeding plumage. I was amazed that they were very much relaxed. I waited for this bird to throw this great pose to press the shutter.”
Prem used a Canon EOS 50D and a 500mm f/4L lens with a 1.4x teleconverter.
