Wandering Albatross

Lucian Parshall of Lansing, Michigan, captured this shot of a Wandering Albatross in January 2010 during a pelagic trip out of Kaikoura on the south island of New Zealand.

"I noticed a flight pattern in which the albatross would fly parallel with the boat about a half-mile out, then turn into the wind and head straight toward its bow," he says. "I leaned out over the port side of the craft and used a Canon 1D MarkIII with a Canon EF 70-200mm lens as it made several passes. I'm sure any birder would feel the rush as a bird with an 11-foot wingspan flew within a couple yards of your lens."
