A juvenile Ruby-throated Hummingbird, its face and part of its bill covered in yellow pollen, rests in subscriber Karen Karl’s garden in Copper Harbor, Michigan.
“This baby just fledged and was trying really hard to fly and visit the flowers in our garden,” she says. “It would sit and rest frequently and I was able to get this shot with its eyes closed. The yellow on its face is pollen from my Nasturtiums.”
“The hummers nest nearby and I frequently see the male doing the courtship flight. They visit our feeders and the many hummingbird-friendly flowers in the garden all summer. When the little ones fledge, the whole family will gather at a feeder.”
Karen used a Sony Cybershot F-717 with a 50mm lens.
