Great Kiskadee and Red-winged Blackbird

A Great Kiskadee gives a Red-winged Blackbird an earful over a disputed perch.

Reader Roy Priest of Cloverdale, British Columbia, shot the photo in January 2011 during a photography workshop led by frequent contributor Alan Murphy. The workshop was held near Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in south Texas.

Alan had set up a feeder in hopes that it would keep Red-winged Blackbirds busy and away from the birds that the photographers were interested in: kiskadees, hummingbirds, thrashers, Green Jays, Golden-fronted Woodpeckers, and other birds. But one Red-wing had other ideas. It landed on a perch that the kiskadee occupied. Roy only had time to fire off seven frames before the larger kiskadee routed the blackbird. He used a Nikon D3 and a 500mm f/4 lens.

Roy posted the photo to our U.S. and Canada Gallery. You can see more of his photos here.
