Anhingas

Jim Chagares of Richmond, Indiana, captured this great shot of a female Anhinga and her brood at Florida’s famed
Viera Wetlands in April 2010 and posted it in our
U.S. and Canada Gallery.
One young bird sticks its head into its mother’s bill to feed while two other chicks wait nearby. “The Viera Wetlands is a great place to study birds,” Jim says. “There are many different species that can be easily seen and photographed because of the openness of the wetlands. I have photographed Anhinga nests before in other locations, but they are more exposed at Viera.”
He used a Canon 1Ds Mark III and an 800mm lens with a 1.4x II extender. We featured Jim’s shot of a
Mountain Bluebird carrying a feather in “Fieldcraft” in our April 2011 issue. More of his photos are on his
website.
