American Crow
© Alexander Viduetsky
Published: January 10, 2011
In late December 2010, subscriber Alexander Viduetsky photographed this American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) as it investigated the wrack line on the beach in Santa Monica, California. He posted the shot in our U.S. and Canada Gallery.

“It’s rather tricky to capture details of the plumage of any blackish bird, and it was one of my rare successful attempts to do so,” he writes. “The crows compete for the food on the beach with multiple gulls and pigeons.”

Alexander used a Canon EOS 7D and a Sigma 300mm f/2.8 telephoto lens with a 1.4x teleconverter. You can see more of his photos on his Flickr page.
