White-tailed Kites attempt to pass a mouse in mid-air at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge at Alviso, California.
Binu John of Fremont, California, shot the photo with his Canon 40D and Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens and posted it in our
U.S. and Canada Gallery.
“The male was trying to hand over the food to the female,” he notes. “The female dropped the mouse immediately after she got it. The male had to go back to hunting to get another one for her.”
You can find the striking white and gray raptor
(Elanus leucurus)
in open country along the west coast, and in Arizona, Texas, Mexico,
and Florida.
