Chandra Jennings of Morristown, New Jersey, captured this photo of a Piping Plover
(Charadrius melodus) a few years ago on Block Island, a well-known birding hotspot off the coast of Rhode Island.
Chandra rode her bike out to the point and started dozing on the beach. "When I woke up, the plover was right by my feet running back and forth up the beach," she says. "It took me a few minutes to get the camera out without scaring him. This shot was the first in a series. As soon as I whipped out the camera, he reacted and started running away."
She used a Canon 20D and a 400mm lens.
