Layne Kennedy (right) sits with Uusaqqak Henson, grandson of polar explorer Matthew Henson. Layne was on assignment in Greenland to cover the Polar Inuit people for Smithsonian Magazine.
We had the pleasure of getting to know him personally in 2005, when he took the photos that accompanied Editor Chuck Hagner’s Nature Conservancy article about the Kirtland’s Warbler's winter grounds on Eleuthera, in the Bahamas.

How great is this? An ash tree grows through a 1954 Crown Victoria near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Several years ago, I was on assignment for Smithsonian Magazine at the Ray Albrecht family's farm, covering their collection of tractors. Ray had a graveyard of several cars, and this Crown Victoria had that cool ash tree coming right out of the hood. Loved it. I've stopped there a few times to say hello and visit the car.
