Mia McPherson
Stunning photos of birds and nature from the Gulf Coast of Florida to the wilds of Utah and Montana
Published: May 1, 2012
Mia McPherson at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area in Utah. Shortly after moving to Florida in 2004, Mia McPherson found her passion: bird photography. She spent every free moment looking for and creating images of birds. She especially loved photographing at Fort De Soto County Park near St. Petersburg, a site Arthur Morris described in our February 2005 issue as the “Cape May of the South.” Mia is self-taught, and she strives to photograph birds without disturbing their natural behaviors. In 2009, she moved to Utah and now spends much of her time during the warmer months camping in the wilderness in Utah and Montana to photograph birds, mammals, scenery, and other natural subjects.
Since November 2009, Mia has posted hundreds of photos to our Photo Galleries. Her photo of a Great Egret appeared on the cover of our October 2011 issue. In addition, her photography has been displayed at the Utah Museum of Natural History and the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Missouri and on the websites of the American Kestrel Partnership and the Florida Shorebird Alliance.
We're happy to present this fantastic collection of 10 of Mia's photos, all chosen by her. In the captions, she tells where and when she took each one.

Roseate Spoonbill
Getting down and dirty pays off when I can get to eye level with a subject. It worked here with a Roseate Spoonbill that was feeding in a Florida tidal lagoon in 2008. After about 10 minutes of crawling through the sand, I was close enough to the bird to fill the frame.
